Target Readership:
The target readership for Dexplicit magazine is aimed for both male and female 18 year olds and above as it is about music you would find in a club and dance festivals. For example clubs like Gategrashers Birmingham, Raver Baby and H.T.I.D in the sun. Although younger readers (teenagers) find interest in buying this magazine too. Because of the age range, these readers would fall into the socioeconomic groups C1/C2, due to them relying on their parents for finance. Or, they may be able to finance their small luxuries through earning in a part-time/weekend job. The readers of Dexplicit are young interesting people who have a passion for music and are keen on finding out about new styles of interesting music and enjoy dancing.

Mixmag is a British dance music and clubbing magazine. It styles itself as "the world's biggest selling dance music magazine. Having begun 1982 in the United Kingdom, it covers dance events, and reviews music and club nights. Mixmag has coined terms and phrases to describe genres and conventions within dance music. The first issue was printed on February 1 1983 as a 16-page black and white magazine published by DMC — the DJ mailout service. The first cover was Shalamar, the first editor DMC’s Tony Prince and the first advertiser was a company called Technics Panasonic. In addition to the change in editorial tone, the relaunched Mixmag features a fashion section, larger size and, according to Mixmag, improved production values. Mixmag carries a cover mix CD each month by a different DJ or artist. The price of Mixmag is £4.20, this could be considered as quite expensive for a magazine, especially if someone is not interested in this type of music but I think the free CD in every issue makes up for this expensive price.
The main colour scheme of the magazine is white and yellow. The masthead is yellow and is in lower case the ‘i’ in ‘mix’ has a rounded dot on it, I think this makes it look like a CD or DJ decks this relates to the genre of music the magazine is made for. Above the masthead is a small strapline in white capital letters saying ‘The worlds biggest dance music and clubbing magazine’ this stands out as the white contrasts the yellow so the audience also reads this. In the top left corner of the magazine there is a small text box at an angle that tells you there is a free CD within the magazine; you can easily see this corner of the magazine when looking at it in a shop.
On the right hand corner there is a small picture, the only other picture on the magazine this picture is anchored with the company logo of ‘Don’t Stay In’ and ‘Last minute NYE party guide’ ‘Don’t Stay In’ is a company that is strongly associated with Mixmag that has their own website that includes articles from the magazine, photos of people from the events and gives you information on upcoming events.
Underneath this is a large yellow text box that has an exclusive feature of the magazine in black capital writing that contrast with the yellow. Carrying on down underneath this and opposite the page, balancing it out is other features that are included in the magazine, the colours white and yellow alternating and also in capital letters. Included in this is on the right hand side, the advertisement to win a trip to snowbombing this would also interest the intended audience for this magazine.
The main headline relates to the artist on the front cover (David Guetta) The image of him is a mid shot of his head and torso, wearing large sunglasses and a grin on his face. The headline reads ‘2009: F**** Me What a Year’ In capital letters in white and yellow, standing out against the image also the use of slang makes this seem interesting to the desired audience. Above the main headline is a small strapline in yellow the reads ‘Guetta Load Of This’ This pun on his name is in yellow capitals and makes the magazine seem clever and much more interesting.
Underneath the main headline there are further more features in the magazine, both on either sides of the page, balancing it out. They have used words like ‘Attack’ ‘Best of’ and ‘Revealed’ to really interest the intended audience. Also they have listed any other features that are included in the magazine.
The main colour schemes of the contents page are black, white and yellow. Again relating to the front cover colours. At the top of the page there is the masthead again but much smaller and in white across from this is the issue month and the worlds contents in very large bold letters. Underneath this is another image of David Guetta smaller this time and with a page number that references to his feature of the magazine. Underneath this is the features of the magazine all in bold white text with a little bit of information underneath and the page number in yellow making it stand out and draw the readers eye to it.
At the very bottom of the contents page is information on the free CD that is included in the magazine, an image of it and also the track listing. Most of this text is in white apart from the artist of the CD and the track numbers, this contrasts the black background.
Next to the features and above the CD information is a large picture of a clubber at one of the events, I think this picture is to do with the company ‘Don’t Stay In’ as it is their style. The image is an over head shot at an angle of a girl at a even, the photographer has used the neon’s at the event to create shadow and bright colours to make the image look really bright and interesting so the audiences eye is immediately drawn in to looking at it. This image is anchored with page number that relates to the article.
The double page in Mixmag that I have chosen to look at is the interview with David Guettta, as he is the main feature on the front of the magazine. The main colour scheme is white background with black text however the main headline text changes colour as it goes over the large image of David Guetta. The words ‘Love’ and ‘Over’ are in different colours making them standout to the readers eye. These colours also relate to the corner of the right hand page where there is a purple and blue image saying ‘Best of ‘09’. The title of the article is a song that David Guetta produced this makes the article recognizable to fans.
On the left hand side of the page is a short text box explaining why David Guetta is the dance music star of the year. This feature is often used to introduce the main feature article.
On the right hand side of the page is a lot of writing on how David Guetta reached his fame and how he produces his music and a lot of other vital information about this artist. Indented in this article is a photo of David Guetta performing at a festival he was headlining.

Weekly Review, Week 1
Kerrang! is a rock music magazine published by Bauer Consumer Media in the United Kingdom. The magazine name is interesting because it is onomatopoeic as it refers to the sound made when playing a power chord on a electric guitar.
The main colours on the magazine front cover are red, yellow and white with the back ground of black. The colour red draws the audiences eye to sections of the magazine, this makes they eye follow sections around the page; therefore the read takes in the whole page.
The magazine looks like a normal magazine, it is the average A4 size and also it has the masthead at the top so it is easy to pick out when searching for the magazine. The white masthead stands out against the black background so immediately our eye is drawn to this. The font is in capitals which make it seem “loud” like music.
The image on the front is a mixture of artists from the genre of music of rock, they are Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) Tom Delonge (Blink 182) M Shadows (Avenged Sevenfold) and Matt Tuck (Bullet for my Valentine) by including these images it interests many different people because it may feature a lead singer of their favourite band on the front making them more inclined to pick up the magazine. The other images in the bottom left hand corner are the posters that are included in the magazine these are Oli Sykes (Bring Me The Horizon), Hayley Williams (Paramore) and The All American Rejects, this again will interest people who pick up the magazine as it may be one of their favourite artists. The image of Oli Sykes stands out as it has a tear of yellow behind it which contrasts with the colour of black therefore this image stands out. There is also a smaller picture on the top strapline. The main images are all separate images that have been cropped and edited to go together to go on the front page and are the anchored with coverlines of other bands that are included in the magazine. These coverlines are all in capitals in yellow and white with a black background with a symbol of red stars.
The issue seems special because of how it says ’50 ALBUMS YOU MUST HEAR IN 2010’ this makes the audience interested and it also has a smaller round image that says ‘EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW’ this implies that they need to buy the magazine to know these thins and its crucial that they do that. The text boxes are in a circle shape making them seem like badges (this also relates to the rock genre) the largest being the red one with the ‘50’ in the middle with blood splatter behind it. The other ‘badge’ that stands out is the one the text box advertising the free posters within the magazine.
On the bottom right of the page there is a banner that includes even more names of bands that are included in the magazine. The text box has the back ground of black with yellow and black writing again with small red dots that draw the reader in. also on top of the box there is a ‘stamp look’ in red that draws the reader in which reads ‘PLUS’. At the top of the page there is a yellow strapline with black texts that advertises a competion to win tickets this is brightly coloured so it interests the intented audience by catching their eye and also being something that the disired audience would be interested in.
The contents of this issue of KERRANG! Is split horizontally in half with a large image at the top and the contents details below. The large image at the top of the page is Bullet For My Valentine. On top of this image is two smaller inserts of pages that are within the magazine. The main colour scheme on this page is yellow and white this relates to the front cover.
Underneath the large image is the main contents information. There is a picture and a letter from the editor on the far right of the page, besides this the text is split into four thin columns. In each column there are small headings in black text boxes, and beneath these are titles in capital letters and in bold. There is another sub-heading, but this time it is within a black text box. The font used here is individual to KERRANG! magazine and very unique, this is therefore easily recognizable. There is also a yellow text box with black font that includes the contents of the ’50 albums you must here in 2010’ this a special feature that is within this issue of the magazine.
Another aspect of the contents page is a small text box in the bottom right hand corner with an overlaying image. This encourages the readers to "Get K! Delivered to your door for just £6 per month!" with additional contact details. This is useful to the magazine, as they would get more money if people regularly subscribed to the magazine.
Top of the Pops magazine was formed in 1995 and is a supplement of the BBC television programme. It was originally described as a mix between 'Smash Hits' and 'NME' but over the years the format has changed, with the magazine featuring less music information and is primarily aimed at young girls with features that include celebrity gossip and fashion and beauty advice.
The main image on the front cover is of former band member of girls aloud, now solo artist, fashion icon and role model; Cheryl Cole. She is often in the public eye due to her music and t.v role. The picture is a mid close up so you can see her hair style and make up clearly it is also airbrushed to give her the look of perfection. The image covers the main masthead, this is different from most magazine as the masthead is the most important but because this is such a popular magazine with a distinct layout so is easily recognized. However the main words are still visible.
The main colour scheme is yellow and pink with hints of white and black. The front is quite busy with 5 images and a strap line on the bottom of a further 6 smaller images showing what is inside the magazine. Every image is anchored by captions. Each caption and headline are different colours and fonts making the front seem busy and interesting. Each article that is mentioned also has a smaller black bubble that gives a reference to a page number where they can find that article.
The cover line which relates to the main story of the magazine is positioned at an angle and is overlapping the picture. The text box back ground is a dark pink colour with the main font being in capitals with large white quotations that stand out; this therefore shows that it is Cheryl’s own words. The words 'World exclusive' are used above this to differentiate the magazine from others making it seem like this is the only place the reader can find this information, this therefore makes it stand out from other magazines.
The language used on the magazine also indicates the age group it's aimed for as it uses abbreviations such as 'OMG'. This is commonly used by teenage girls. This shows the magazine is trying to relate to them and interest them.
The banner across the bottom of the page, relates to parts of the magazine as it is also in dark pink, this dark pink starts to draw the eye around the page. The banner shows the 'hot' posters that are included in the magazine. This is followed by pictures of the 6 people, not all of them being involved with music, which indicates that the magazine is edging away from being primarily about music and just being aimed at things girls are interested in.
Beside the picture of Cheryl, there is a small picture of Alexandra Burke’s head in a white box. This sort of editing of a picture makes it stand out and is used throughout the magazine. There is also box on the left of the page featuring JLS, off the popular TV show 'The X Factor'. These two boxes levels out the page. This is to advertise that inside the magazine you can 'WIN!' signed JLS hoodies. There is also a strap line of a quiz featured in the magazine which relates to friendship issues; relating to issues of the target audience.

Finished
Evaluation
I have finished my student magazine, I am pleased with how it went over all although I could of done better in some parts. For my front cover I used three images, one for the main one and two smaller images. My magazine has a standard strapline on the top of the magazine, but I thought I would do something different by having the masthead at the bottom of the page. I used the main colours of pink black and yellow which I thought would appeal to my target audience. I chose my name through people participating in my questionnaire where the told me which name they preferred. The contents page carries on the colour scheme of the front page and includes more pictures that relate to the front which connect the two.
• How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My student magazine is made for teenage girls, I have represented them by including pictures of teenagers on the front. I did this to appeal to the certain age group of 16-18.
• What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
The magazine would be on sale in college so therefore college people would be interested in it. If it was on sale elsewhere I don’t think people would buy it because they would not find the information within the magazine helpful. The college already has a magazine but this magazine would appeal more to the girls.
• Who would be the audience for your media product?
The suitable audience for my media product is for females aged 16-18, who are interested in fashion and attend the college.
• How did you attract/address your audience?
In my magazine I included a special offer to win a bash ticket, this would interest the students as the bash is something they would want to go to. I also used words like ‘exclusive’ to make them want to buy it.
• What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I used Microsoft publisher to create my magazine front cover and contents. I used this because of the ways you can edit the document easily and upload digital camera pictures.
