Weekly Review, Week 1

I have completed two out of three of my textual analysis, I have one last textual analysis to do and i have chosen to do Mixmag for this as i will be doing front cover, contents page and a double page spread. I have chosen Mixmag to do all three of these because it is the type of music i find most interesting and the sort of music magazine i would like to create. What i have found out so far from my research into magazines is that the magazines often have a colour scheme that carries on to the contents page and within the magazine. Also there are many image included into a magazine to interest a range of people as their are so many different types of music genres and sub categories in music these days.
KERRANG!

Kerrang! is a rock music magazine published by Bauer Consumer Media in the United Kingdom. The magazine name is interesting because it is onomatopoeic as it refers to the sound made when playing a power chord on a electric guitar.

The main colours on the magazine front cover are red, yellow and white with the back ground of black. The colour red draws the audiences eye to sections of the magazine, this makes they eye follow sections around the page; therefore the read takes in the whole page.

The magazine looks like a normal magazine, it is the average A4 size and also it has the masthead at the top so it is easy to pick out when searching for the magazine. The white masthead stands out against the black background so immediately our eye is drawn to this. The font is in capitals which make it seem “loud” like music.

The image on the front is a mixture of artists from the genre of music of rock, they are Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) Tom Delonge (Blink 182) M Shadows (Avenged Sevenfold) and Matt Tuck (Bullet for my Valentine) by including these images it interests many different people because it may feature a lead singer of their favourite band on the front making them more inclined to pick up the magazine. The other images in the bottom left hand corner are the posters that are included in the magazine these are Oli Sykes (Bring Me The Horizon), Hayley Williams (Paramore) and The All American Rejects, this again will interest people who pick up the magazine as it may be one of their favourite artists. The image of Oli Sykes stands out as it has a tear of yellow behind it which contrasts with the colour of black therefore this image stands out. There is also a smaller picture on the top strapline. The main images are all separate images that have been cropped and edited to go together to go on the front page and are the anchored with coverlines of other bands that are included in the magazine. These coverlines are all in capitals in yellow and white with a black background with a symbol of red stars.

The issue seems special because of how it says ’50 ALBUMS YOU MUST HEAR IN 2010’ this makes the audience interested and it also has a smaller round image that says ‘EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW’ this implies that they need to buy the magazine to know these thins and its crucial that they do that. The text boxes are in a circle shape making them seem like badges (this also relates to the rock genre) the largest being the red one with the ‘50’ in the middle with blood splatter behind it. The other ‘badge’ that stands out is the one the text box advertising the free posters within the magazine.

On the bottom right of the page there is a banner that includes even more names of bands that are included in the magazine. The text box has the back ground of black with yellow and black writing again with small red dots that draw the reader in. also on top of the box there is a ‘stamp look’ in red that draws the reader in which reads ‘PLUS’. At the top of the page there is a yellow strapline with black texts that advertises a competion to win tickets this is brightly coloured so it interests the intented audience by catching their eye and also being something that the disired audience would be interested in.

CONTENTS PAGE

The contents of this issue of KERRANG! Is split horizontally in half with a large image at the top and the contents details below. The large image at the top of the page is Bullet For My Valentine. On top of this image is two smaller inserts of pages that are within the magazine. The main colour scheme on this page is yellow and white this relates to the front cover.

Underneath the large image is the main contents information. There is a picture and a letter from the editor on the far right of the page, besides this the text is split into four thin columns. In each column there are small headings in black text boxes, and beneath these are titles in capital letters and in bold. There is another sub-heading, but this time it is within a black text box. The font used here is individual to KERRANG! magazine and very unique, this is therefore easily recognizable. There is also a yellow text box with black font that includes the contents of the ’50 albums you must here in 2010’ this a special feature that is within this issue of the magazine.

Another aspect of the contents page is a small text box in the bottom right hand corner with an overlaying image. This encourages the readers to "Get K! Delivered to your door for just £6 per month!" with additional contact details. This is useful to the magazine, as they would get more money if people regularly subscribed to the magazine.

Top of the Pops

Top of the Pops magazine was formed in 1995 and is a supplement of the BBC television programme. It was originally described as a mix between 'Smash Hits' and 'NME' but over the years the format has changed, with the magazine featuring less music information and is primarily aimed at young girls with features that include celebrity gossip and fashion and beauty advice.

The main image on the front cover is of former band member of girls aloud, now solo artist, fashion icon and role model; Cheryl Cole. She is often in the public eye due to her music and t.v role. The picture is a mid close up so you can see her hair style and make up clearly it is also airbrushed to give her the look of perfection. The image covers the main masthead, this is different from most magazine as the masthead is the most important but because this is such a popular magazine with a distinct layout so is easily recognized. However the main words are still visible.

The main colour scheme is yellow and pink with hints of white and black. The front is quite busy with 5 images and a strap line on the bottom of a further 6 smaller images showing what is inside the magazine. Every image is anchored by captions. Each caption and headline are different colours and fonts making the front seem busy and interesting. Each article that is mentioned also has a smaller black bubble that gives a reference to a page number where they can find that article.

The cover line which relates to the main story of the magazine is positioned at an angle and is overlapping the picture. The text box back ground is a dark pink colour with the main font being in capitals with large white quotations that stand out; this therefore shows that it is Cheryl’s own words. The words 'World exclusive' are used above this to differentiate the magazine from others making it seem like this is the only place the reader can find this information, this therefore makes it stand out from other magazines.

The language used on the magazine also indicates the age group it's aimed for as it uses abbreviations such as 'OMG'. This is commonly used by teenage girls. This shows the magazine is trying to relate to them and interest them.

The banner across the bottom of the page, relates to parts of the magazine as it is also in dark pink, this dark pink starts to draw the eye around the page. The banner shows the 'hot' posters that are included in the magazine. This is followed by pictures of the 6 people, not all of them being involved with music, which indicates that the magazine is edging away from being primarily about music and just being aimed at things girls are interested in.

Beside the picture of Cheryl, there is a small picture of Alexandra Burke’s head in a white box. This sort of editing of a picture makes it stand out and is used throughout the magazine. There is also box on the left of the page featuring JLS, off the popular TV show 'The X Factor'. These two boxes levels out the page. This is to advertise that inside the magazine you can 'WIN!' signed JLS hoodies. There is also a strap line of a quiz featured in the magazine which relates to friendship issues; relating to issues of the target audience.

Finished

I have now finished my preliminary task and i'm ready to start my main task of the music magazine. I will begin by posting my action plan of how i plan to work in the next few weeks.

Evaluation

• In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
I have finished my student magazine, I am pleased with how it went over all although I could of done better in some parts. For my front cover I used three images, one for the main one and two smaller images. My magazine has a standard strapline on the top of the magazine, but I thought I would do something different by having the masthead at the bottom of the page. I used the main colours of pink black and yellow which I thought would appeal to my target audience. I chose my name through people participating in my questionnaire where the told me which name they preferred. The contents page carries on the colour scheme of the front page and includes more pictures that relate to the front which connect the two.

• How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My student magazine is made for teenage girls, I have represented them by including pictures of teenagers on the front. I did this to appeal to the certain age group of 16-18.

• What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
The magazine would be on sale in college so therefore college people would be interested in it. If it was on sale elsewhere I don’t think people would buy it because they would not find the information within the magazine helpful. The college already has a magazine but this magazine would appeal more to the girls.

• Who would be the audience for your media product?
The suitable audience for my media product is for females aged 16-18, who are interested in fashion and attend the college.

• How did you attract/address your audience?

In my magazine I included a special offer to win a bash ticket, this would interest the students as the bash is something they would want to go to. I also used words like ‘exclusive’ to make them want to buy it.

• What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I used Microsoft publisher to create my magazine front cover and contents. I used this because of the ways you can edit the document easily and upload digital camera pictures.
